Compost Color Workshop with Lacuna

$65

In this workshop, participants will learn how to coax color from food waste including avocado seeds and skins to dye silk fabric. Lacuna owner, Lucy Butler, will instruct on how to properly clean and mordant your material before dyeing, how to make and dispose of a dye bath, and how to tie the fabric to create fun patterns.

This is a pre-recorded virtual class taught from Lucy’s kitchen. Students will have the opportunity to work at their own pace and own time, then come together to unwrap and unveil their designs on a live zoom call with Lucy. There will also be time for a Q&A so she can answer any questions about the process of dyeing with plant material.

We will ship the kit or participants will pick it up in-store + receive a link to the workshop recording via email! Be sure to pick up your kit at least a day before unveiling your design with Lucy on Sunday, June 27th from 4-4:30pm.

Bio

Lacuna is an experimental natural dye studio that creates one-of-a-kind textiles and educates about the process of dyeing with plants.

Dyeing with plants is slow and labor-intensive. It begins with a seed in the spring and flows with the changing of the seasons. Each piece is dyed individually as each plant gives a unique and unrepeatable color. The pieces are sewn by hand with luxury finishes made to last.

Owner, Lucy Butler, a graduate of Drexel University’s fashion design program and a dress designer for a decade, has been dyeing with plants since 2015. In 2018, she made the decision to leave the fashion industry and begin a journey of research and discovery deeper into the world of plants and formed Lacuna.

Lucy is committed to building sustainable practices and community values into Lacuna. Plant dyes are healthier for the dyer, our waterways and our skin. Lucy keeps a small footprint by producing thoughtful, limited quantities of goods and uses dye plants that are grown and foraged in the Philadelphia area. She is honored to share her knowledge with others through workshops that merge ritual, color and craft.
